
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Blow Molding Lamps to Actually Keep Up
If you’re running a SACMI rotary blow molding machine, you know how fast things move. The PET preforms fly through that oven. There isn’t any room for error. When your lamps are sluggish—taking too long to heat up or failing to adjust on the fly—you see it immediately in the product. You get weirdly thin walls, deformed bottles, and a lot of wasted plastic. It’s frustrating. That’s why we build our infrared tubes to kill that lag.
How we make them snap to attention
To get the heat density you need for PET, we go with a high-wattage, shortwave setup. We use halogen-filled quartz because it cuts down on thermal inertia. In plain English? The filament doesn’t “linger.” It jumps from cold to full power in milliseconds. When you pair these with a high-frequency switching power supply, the response is basically instant. You can finally stop worrying about that “cold start” drift that usually kills the first few dozen bottles of every single run.
The nitty-gritty on the build
We use reinforced quartz glass because rapid cycling is brutal on materials. It’s built to take the thermal shock without cracking. We also focus on the connectors—usually R7s or specialized SK leads. They’re designed to be a simple drop-in replacement. We do this because a loose connection is a nightmare; it creates localized hotspots that burn out your end-caps before you even realize there’s a problem. One more thing: we often add a selective coating to the quartz. This tweaks the emission spectrum so the heat actually hits the PET material instead of just warming up the air inside the oven. It’s way more efficient.
The one thing to watch out for
Here’s the catch. These high-density lamps pack a massive amount of energy into a tiny space. Because they’re so powerful, your cooling blowers have to be up to the task. If your airflow is weak, the oven gets too hot and your preforms will crystallize. You get the speed and the precision, but you’ve got to keep an eye on those ambient temperatures to keep everything stable.
