
Can New Infrared Lamps Actually Speed Up Your Old Blow Molding Machines?
I talk to a lot of operators running older blow molding lines who are convinced they need a brand-new machine to hit their hourly targets. They think they’ve just hit a wall. But usually, the machine isn’t the problem. The oven is. If your preforms aren’t hitting that sweet spot temperature every single time, you’re stuck slowing everything down just to keep the defects from spiking. It’s frustrating. You know the machine can do more, but the heat just isn’t keeping up. The trick is all about heat density. If you want to move faster, you need more heat in less time. Simple as that. We handle this by swapping out the old lamps for high-output halogen quartz tubes. These push way more short-wave radiation into the PET resin, so the preform gets to blowing temperature much quicker. Now, a quick heads-up on the technical side: keep an eye on your voltage. A 400V system is great because it lets you crank up the wattage without frying your existing wiring. But there’s a catch. More heat in the oven means the air around the mandates gets hotter. If your cooling fans are clogged with dust or just too small for the job, you might actually start melting your oven frames or messing up your sensors. Check those fans first. Will they actually fit? Yes. We use heavy-wall quartz glass so the tubes don’t bow or warp when things get hot. If you’re running Krones, our replacements use the standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. It’s a simple swap. You don’t have to tear apart your electrical cabinet or rewire a thing. You just pull out the burnt-out tubes and pop these in. What does this actually do for your bottom line? When you upgrade the lamps, you don’t need as much oven length to get the temperature you need. This gives you two choices. You can either push the machine faster and increase your output, or you can dial back the power to make the lamps last longer. We’ve seen old machines jump up by 10-15% in throughput just by closing that thermal gap. It’s a cheap way to get a lot more juice out of a machine that’s already paid for itself.
